Build It Right & They Will Come

I often hear people complain that their horses never use their run-in sheds. My experience has been that if a run-in shed has been built and oriented correctly, horses use them frequently. For instance, the roof of the run-in in the article photo below is too low; it will trap heat and the sun beating down on the roof will further radiate heat down into the shed at horse level. The low ceiling is also a safety hazard should a horse rear. The shed is not deep enough to create shade dark enough that flies won’t want to enter. The size of the shed is for one horse only. The overhang on the front is inadequate to prevent sun or rain/snow from coming into the shed except when it is coming from behind or straight down.
